Health Equity Book Circle

Health Equity Book Club for exploring diversity, inclusion, and social change through reading and discussion.

Welcome!

Starting in January of 2026

The Health Equity Book Circle is more than a book club — it’s a live, learning community for healthcare professionals and changemakers.

  • Series One dives into identity, belonging, and healing.

  • Series Two explores systems, justice, and advocacy.

Take one series to focus deeply.

Take both for the full-circle journey: from story to system, identity to action.

Our Health Equity Book Group is intentionally designed for working professionals.
Each session meets at 12:00 pm ET — a Lunch & Learn hour that allows you to pause, reflect, and connect with others who care about equity as deeply as you do.

Confidentiality: To protect participant safety and candor, sessions are live only; no recordings will be made or shared.

Each cohort will have no more than 10 participants per series for deep engagement.

*Continuing Education: 6.0 Contact Hours each series

This Nursing Continuing Professional Development activity was approved by Pennsylvania State Nurses Association Approver Unit, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

To receive the full 6.0 contact hours for each series, learners must:

  1. Attend all six (6) live book circle sessions in their entirety

  2. Complete the session evaluation after each meeting

  3. Complete the final post-series evaluation

Partial credit will be awarded based on the number of sessions attended and the corresponding completed evaluations.

Example:

  • Attendance at 4 of 6 sessions + 4 session evaluations + series evaluation = 4.0 contact hours

  • Attendance at 1 session + session evaluation = 1.0 contact hour

Accessibility: If cost is a barrier, please message there may be limited community-supported seats available.

Series One: Identity & Healing Book Circle

Trust, Bias, and Belonging in Healthcare

Step into the personal side of health equity. In this series, we explore stories of identity, resilience, and trust through fiction and memoir. Together we’ll uncover how bias, culture, and belonging shape health outcomes — and practice tools for trauma-informed, equity-centered care.

📚 Booklist:

  • The Hate U Give – Angie Thomas (fiction)

  • On Rotation – Shirlene Obuobi (fiction)

  • Breath, Eyes, Memory – Edwidge Danticat (fiction)

  • The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks – Rebecca Skloot (non-fiction)

  • The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down – Anne Fadiman (non-fiction)

  • Legacy – Uche Blackstock (memoir)

Series Two: Equity & Justice Book Circle

Reimagining Health Systems
Zoom out to the systems level. In this series, we examine how structural inequities — from environmental injustice to maternal health disparities — affect communities and professionals alike. Through powerful nonfiction and narrative works, we’ll discuss and build strategies for advocacy, systemic change, and equity-driven leadership.

📚 Booklist:

  • Take Us to a Better Place – RWJF Collection (fiction/short stories)

  • The Beautiful Darkness – Joshunda Sanders (memoir)

  • Pregnant While Black – Monique Rainford (narrative nonfiction)

  • Doing Harm – Maya Dusenbery (non-fiction)

  • The Broken Ladder – Keith Payne (non-fiction)

  • What the Eyes Don’t See – Mona Hanna-Attisha (non-fiction)
